The Best Thing Your Family Will Do in Brevard This Summer (No Hiking Boots Required)

By Pisgah Climbing School | Brevard, North Carolina

You've been to Sliding Rock. You've done Looking Glass Falls. You've walked the trails, floated the river, and eaten the ice cream. Brevard is incredible — you already know that. But if you're looking for the one experience that your kids will still be talking about in September, the one that doesn't involve a screen or a gift shop, the one where everybody in the family actually does something together?

It's rock climbing. Real rock climbing. Outside, on actual granite, in the middle of Pisgah National Forest — and you don't need any experience to do it.

You Don't Have to Be a Climber to Go Rock Climbing

This is the thing most people don't know: you don't have to be athletic, outdoorsy, or brave to have an incredible day on the rock. You just have to show up.

At Pisgah Climbing School, our AMGA-certified guides handle everything. We bring all the gear — harness, helmet, shoes, rope. We teach you exactly what to do before you ever leave the ground. And we take you to routes on Looking Glass Rock and throughout Pisgah National Forest that are specifically chosen for your group's age, fitness level, and comfort.

Kids as young as five have climbed with us. So have grandparents. So have people who were terrified of heights and wanted to do something about it. So have families who just wanted to get off their phones for a day and do something that felt genuinely alive.

That's what a day of guided climbing looks like.

Why Summer in Pisgah Is the Perfect Time to Try Climbing

Western North Carolina summers are something special. While most of the country is sweating through flat, humid heat, the Blue Ridge Mountains stay cool, shaded, and green. The rock faces of Pisgah get morning shade, the forest smells incredible, and the views from the top of a route — over miles of unbroken canopy — are the kind you don't forget.

Summer is also when Looking Glass Rock is at its most beautiful. The dome rises nearly 500 feet above the forest floor, visible from the highway as you drive into Pisgah, and it's one of the most iconic pieces of granite in the entire Southeast. Our beginner-friendly routes are tucked into its lower faces and surrounding walls — accessible, well-protected, and genuinely stunning places to spend a day.

For families already visiting Brevard, guided climbing fits perfectly into a week of mountain activities. It's a morning or full-day outing that doesn't require any prior planning on your end beyond booking. We take care of the rest.

What a Guided Climbing Day Actually Looks Like

Here's the honest, practical picture of what to expect:

Morning: You meet your guide at a trailhead in Pisgah National Forest. The approach to most of our beginner crags is short — typically under a mile. Enough to warm up your legs and feel the forest around you, not enough to wear anybody out before the climbing starts.

At the crag: Your guide sets up a top rope anchor, fits everyone with a harness and helmet, and walks you through the basics — how to tie in, how belaying works, what to do with your feet on the rock. This takes about 20 minutes and is genuinely interesting, not just safety theater.

On the wall: You climb. Your guide is right there, coaching footwork, offering encouragement, and managing the rope. Most people who have never climbed before make it significantly higher than they expected on their first attempt. That moment — when a kid who was nervous at the bottom looks down and realizes how high they've gotten — is something we get to see every single day, and it never gets old.

The rest of the day: More climbs, different routes, increasing challenge as the group finds its footing. There's plenty of time to rest, eat lunch on a ledge with a view, and just enjoy being somewhere extraordinary.

Who This Is Perfect For

Families visiting Brevard — Guided climbing is one of the most memorable activities you can add to a Pisgah vacation. It works for mixed-age groups, requires no prior experience, and gives everyone something to accomplish together. Kids leave with a specific, concrete thing they did: I climbed a real mountain.

Complete beginners — If you've ever thought "I'd love to try climbing but I wouldn't know where to start," this is exactly where to start. Our intro days are designed from the ground up for people with zero experience. No gym, no prerequisite courses, no gear to buy.

People who want to learn, not just try — Some guests come for the experience. Others come because they want to actually learn the skill — to understand knots, anchors, and movement well enough to keep climbing after the trip. We offer both, and our guides are exceptional teachers.

Groups and corporate outings — Climbing is one of the best team-building activities that actually works. The communication, trust, and shared accomplishment on the rock translate in ways that a conference room never will. We accommodate groups of all sizes.

Teenagers — If you have a teenager who is bored, disengaged, or glued to their phone, put them on a rock face. There is no distraction on the wall. There is only the next handhold, the next foothold, and the very real question of whether they can make it to the top. They usually can. And they usually want to do it again.

Looking Glass Rock: Your Backyard Has One of the Best Climbing Areas in the East

Most people who visit Brevard drive past Looking Glass Rock on Highway 276 without realizing they're looking at one of the premier climbing destinations in the entire Southeast. The dome has been drawing climbers from across the country for decades, and for good reason — it offers everything from mellow slab climbing for beginners to demanding multi-pitch routes for experienced leaders, all on beautiful, featured granite.

As Brevard's local climbing school, we know every inch of this rock. We know which routes are best for first-timers, which faces dry fastest after rain, which ledges have the best views, and how to make a day here feel like an adventure rather than a field trip.

When you climb Looking Glass with Pisgah Climbing School, you're not just getting a guided outing. You're getting the local knowledge that takes years to build.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in shape? No specific fitness level is required for a beginner climbing day. If you can hike a moderate trail, you can climb with us.

What age is appropriate? We work with climbers as young as five. For younger children, we recommend booking a private guide so we can tailor the experience to your family.

What should I wear? Comfortable athletic clothing that you can move in. Closed-toe shoes for the approach (we provide climbing shoes). Sun protection and layers — the mountains can be cooler than expected, especially in the morning.

How far in advance should I book? Summer weekends fill up fast. We recommend booking at least two to three weeks in advance, especially for July and August.

Is it safe? Yes. Our guides are AMGA-certified — the highest standard in the American guiding industry. Every client is in a helmet with a top rope managed by a trained professional. We take safety seriously without making it feel intimidating.
