Whitesides Mountain is the most imposing cliff face in the Southeast — a sheer granite wall rising nearly 750 feet above the Highlands-Cashiers plateau, with some of the longest and most committing routes on the East Coast. For climbers ready to step into serious terrain, there is nothing else quite like it in the region.
The Southeast Face is the heart of the climbing. The mountain's signature route, the Original Route (III/IV, 5.10c–5.11a), spans more than ten pitches with the majority of climbing in the 5.7–5.9 range — accessible in grade but serious in nature, with sustained exposure, limited protection on key sections, and weather that can develop faster than almost anywhere else in the Southern Appalachians. For intermediate climbers ready to experience Whitesides for the first time, Save the Shrimp (5.9) offers an introduction to the mountain's scale and character at a more approachable level — a genuine Whitesides experience without the full commitment of the longer Grade IV lines. Other notable routes include Traditions (5.11c), Whipping Boy (5.11d), and The Matrix (5.12c) — lines that have defined bold climbing in the Southeast for decades.
Whitesides also comes alive in winter. The North Face hosts some of the most reliable ice climbing in North Carolina, making it a premier destination when conditions form. This is not a venue for the unprepared. Whitesides demands respect — for its length, its commitment, and its weather. A guide is not just recommended here; it is essential. Pisgah Climbing School's guides know this mountain intimately and are equipped to manage its unique demands, from route selection to real-time weather judgment to efficient movement on sustained terrain.Located approximately 1.5 hours from Asheville and 45 minutes from Brevard near the town of Cashiers, NC.
