Pilot Mountain State Park is one of North Carolina's most iconic landmarks and one of the best single-pitch climbing destinations in the Piedmont region. Its quartzite walls offer a remarkable variety of terrain — slab, vertical face, cracks, and overhanging roofs — all within minutes of the parking area and accessible on a standard 60-meter rope. Bolted anchor stations sit at the top of nearly every route, keeping the day efficient and the focus on climbing.
The variety of terrain in a compact setting is what makes Pilot Mountain exceptional for guided instruction. Beginners, gym climbers moving outdoors, and intermediate climbers building toward lead climbing all find exactly what they need here. Classic routes like Honey Pot (5.4), Pole Dancing (5.7), and Chicken Bone (5.8) offer progression in a single day without ever switching crags. With 12 climbing walls total, there is always the right route for the right moment.
Located 30 minutes north of Winston-Salem and two hours northeast of Brevard, Pilot Mountain is Pisgah Climbing School's home crag for guided days and instructional programs serving climbers across the Piedmont and Triad regions of NC. Commercial permits are required and handled by PCS on your behalf.
