PCS Guide
Meet Ian Oddo
Background
Ian Oddo came to climbing the way a lot of people do — completely by accident. Two weekends outside was all it took to change the entire direction of his life.
Ian grew up outside Cleveland, Ohio with his focus squarely on music — concert band, music education, a bachelor's degree, a plan. Then, after college, he walked into a climbing gym for the first time. Two weekends on real rock later, that plan was gone.
He relocated to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky, one of the premier sport climbing destinations in the country, where he spent three years working as a Single Pitch Instructor and climbing hard sport routes in his off hours. Road trips to Squamish, Red Rock Canyon, and Yosemite Valley filled out his resume and gave him a feel for climbing terrain that reaches well beyond any single region. The Red River Gorge is the kind of place that either burns people out or sharpens them — for Ian, it sharpened him.
That foundation brought him to western North Carolina and a career as a full-time guide at Pisgah Climbing School. Ian guides across the full range of PCS programs — from beginner and family climbing days on the crags of Pisgah National Forest to advanced climbing for clients working toward more serious objectives. He's equally at home introducing someone to the vertical world for the first time as he is helping an experienced climber dial in technique and push their grade. That range — and the genuine enthusiasm he brings to both ends of it — is what makes him effective.
When Ian's not guiding, you'll find him reading, deep in a video game, or folding origami. The precision and patience that makes for a good origami practitioner, it turns out, translates pretty well to climbing.
